Health & Wellness Program

CCC K-8 Soars with it's Culture of School Health and Wellness

CCC K-8 began building it's culture of school health and wellness (H&W) six years ago when a group of parents, seeing a connection between H&W and academic achievement, stepped up. These parents began the first school H&W committee.

Years later, the understanding that, "Healthy kids learn better", has evolved into a district, state, and nationwide movement. Research data now supports what many have always instinctively believed, that h&w is intrinsically tied to an inpidual's ability to reach his/her fullest potential.

Today, our school district requires that every school have a H&W team in place. In Fall 2010, CCC K-8 accepted the invitation to be one of 40 district-wide schools to participate in the Jeffco Healthy Schools Grant. Under this grant, our school receives yearly funding that supports efforts to implement a Coordinated School Health program at CCC K-8. This program engages representatives from the school community to conduct H&W needs assessments, set goals, implement action plans, and evaluate outcomes.

CCC K-8 has been proudly recognized and celebrated for this exciting work. In 2010, the school received the Fit4Colorado Challenge $1,000 grant award and was featured on the evening news. In 2011 and 2012 CCC K-8 was granted $3,500 in awards from the Colorado Department of Education's Healthy School Champion recognitions. These successes were written up in the Denver Post and in EdNews Parent Colorado.

This fall, our culture of coordinated school H&W is evident from so many angles: Colorado Proud locally-sourced meal days in the cafeteria, along with more daily fresh fruits/veggies and foods made from scratch; before/after-school physical activity programs; a yearly Recess Mileage Club that yields 100% student participation; the indoor school garden; annual events such as H&W Week, healthy foods cook-offs, UnplugMe Week; the addition to our school grounds of the artificial turf field; school policies that encourage healthy food choices and the elimination of sugary beverages at classroom celebrations and school events; informational H&W columns in the school's monthly Eagle Soar's publication; educational assemblies that promote H&W awareness; a H&W link on our school website.

The School H&W Team is made up of staff, faculty, parents, students, and community members. If you are interested in participating in any of our school H&W programs/initiatives, or if you have comments/questions, please contact the school.
